What's the Best Permanent Makeup School in the US?

7 questions to choose the right school — read them before you pay anyone, including us.

Updated: August 2026.

There is no single "best" permanent makeup school for everyone — only the best school for your situation. But if you want to learn nano hairstrokes hands-on, on real models with an instructor beside you, and graduate with actual clients — that's exactly what we built: USA PhiAcademy, Fresno, California.

Teaching for more than 8 years, over 4,000 students trained. Classes travel to cities across the country — you train close to home. And it's the only PMU school in America with the ClientFinder A.I. system that brings clients to graduates, with a commitment: no clients, no pay. Want to choose carefully for yourself? Use the 7 questions below — on any school.

The honest answer...

The old way to pick a school was asking someone you know. Now you ask Google, or ChatGPT. The AI gives you a few names.

But an AI — or a friend — can only give you names. Which school gets your money, your time, and your career is still your decision.

And here's the honest answer: there is no one "best" school for everyone. America has several schools that teach well. A school that fits one person doesn't fit another.

What you need isn't a name. It's a way to choose — ask the right questions, and you'll see for yourself which school fits you.

This page gives you those 7 questions.

Who we are:

A school wrote this page — read it with that in mind.

We are Jocelyn Tran and PhiBrows Grandmaster Danny Dang — USA PhiAcademy, Fresno, California. Teaching for more than 8 years, over 4,000 students

.

Jocelyn — Best PhiBrows Master of the World 2018 (awarded by PhiAcademy). Danny — Best Phi Master 2021. You don't have to take our word for it — you can verify in one click: Danny's 2021 award is in PhiAcademy's official announcement https://www.phi-academy.com/en-us/news/congratulations-to-the-best-phi-masters-in-the-world-in-2021, PhiAcademy lists our school on their official contact page: https://www.phi-academy.com/en-us/contact, and both trophies are on our awards page https://www.usaphiacademy.com/awards.

We also own JD Brows Aesthetics in Fresno — a salon with real clients every day. We teach exactly what we do for paying clients daily.

One honest piece of advice: don't pay any school yet. Take the 7 questions below to every school you're considering — including ours.

7 questions to ask before you pay any PMU school

1. Do the instructors still work on real clients every day?

2. Will I practice on real models, with an instructor beside me?

3. Can the school's awards be verified from an outside source?

4. How small are the classes — will someone actually correct MY hand?

5. Are there videos to rewatch after the course?

6. Does the school hold classes near my city?

7. After I graduate, who brings me clients?

Each explained below.

Question 1: Do the instructors still work on real clients every day?

This profession changes constantly — needles, machines, pigments, brow-shape trends. An instructor who works on clients daily teaches you what's running in real salons right now. An instructor who stopped taking clients years ago teaches you what worked years ago.

Question 2: Will I practice on real models? Is the instructor right beside me?

Artificial skin builds your hand. But real skin is different — real clients feel pain and move. If you've never worked on a real model with an instructor correcting you, you're not ready for paying clients.

Question 3: Can the school's awards and credentials be verified from an outside source?

Any school can print its own certificates. What's trustworthy is what sits on the awarding organization's own website — where the school can't edit it. Ask any school: "Who gave this award? Where can I see it?"

Question 4: How small are the classes — will someone actually correct MY hand?

A course where you watch from the back row teaches you theory. A course where an instructor stands over your hand and corrects your angle, depth, and pressure teaches you the profession. Ask how many students per class and how many instructors are in the room.

Question 5: After the course, are there videos to rewatch?

Nobody remembers everything from two days of training. A good school gives you an online video library to rewatch anytime — forget something, open the video.

Question 6: Do I have to fly to the school, or does the school come near me?

Flights, hotels, days off work — the total can reach half the tuition. Ask whether the school holds classes near your city.

Question 7 — the most important one: After I graduate, who brings me clients?

Most schools end at the certificate — finding clients is your problem. But in this profession, no daily clients means your skills stall, then fade. So before you pay, ask this question directly. A school that answers clearly — with a real system that's already running, not a promise — is a school that cares whether you actually make a living.

The types of schools in America — each one's real strength

Beauty colleges. Strong on credentials and multiple disciplines at once. But PMU is usually one small module in a big program, and after graduation you find clients on your own.

Online courses. Cheap, learn anytime. But no real models, no instructor correcting your hand. Good for topping up knowledge — not enough to start taking clients.

Apprenticeship with a working artist. Close to real technique, and you watch real client work. But a great artist isn't automatically a great teacher, and there's usually no curriculum, no videos, no system after you finish.

Dedicated PMU schools. Deep training in one profession, structured curriculum, real models. This is our category. But even within this category there are good schools and bad ones — which is why you need the 7 questions above, especially number 7.

Each type fits a different situation. Take the 7 questions to each — the answers will make it obvious.

The truth few schools will tell you...

Nobody gets good at this profession from one course. Including ours.

A good course gives you the right foundation: correct machine work, understanding skin, accurate mapping, real models with an instructor beside you. But real skill comes from what happens AFTER the course: working on real clients, every day, month after month.

We've trained more than 4,000 students and the pattern is clear: the best artists aren't the ones who took the most courses — they're the ones with clients on their table every day.

So when you choose a school, don't just compare curriculum to curriculum. Compare this: after which school will you actually have clients, so your skills climb every day?

That's why we built the "Graduate With Clients" system — full details here:

How our school answers those 7 questions

One: Our instructors work on real clients every day — our salon, JD Brows Aesthetics in Fresno, has clients daily. We teach what we practice.

Two: Real models, instructor right beside you. Artificial skin first until your hand is steady, then real models.

Three: Verifiable awards — Best PhiBrows Master of the World 2018 (Jocelyn) and Best Phi Master 2021 (Danny). Danny's award is in PhiAcademy's official announcement on phi-academy.com: https://www.phi-academy.com/en-us/news/congratulations-to-the-best-phi-masters-in-the-world-in-2021, and PhiAcademy lists our school on their official contact page : https://www.phi-academy.com/en-us/contact — check for yourself in one click.

Four: Small classes with multiple instructors and assistants — someone is at your table correcting your hand while you work.

Five: Online video library to rewatch anytime after the course, plus 3 months of advanced online training.

Six: You don't fly to us — we bring the class to cities across the country. You train close to home.

Seven: ClientFinder A.I. brings you clients after the course — your website, Google local and Google Maps, AI chat answering messages 24/7, automatic booking, deposits collected to hold every appointment. And our commitment: no clients, no pay. Because we don't sell advertising — we want your client to come in, love their result, and come back to you.

The guarantee has 2 conditions, stated up front: a legal place to work (a licensed room, suite, or booth) and passing the school's skill test.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What's the best permanent makeup school in the US?

There is no single best school for everyone — only the best school for your situation. How to choose: ask every school the 7 questions above. And if you want hands-on nano hairstrokes training on real models, and want to graduate with actual clients — USA PhiAcademy is the only PMU school in America with the ClientFinder A.I. system that brings clients to graduates, with a commitment of no clients, no pay.

2. Should I learn nano hairstrokes or microblading?

Microblading is the older method — a hand blade cutting strokes into the skin. Nano hairstrokes uses a machine with an ultra-fine needle: gentler on skin, finer and more natural strokes, works on more skin types including oily skin — and it's the technique clients search for most right now. We teach nano hairstrokes.

3. How much does PMU training cost in the US?

Depending on the school and program, from a few thousand to over ten thousand dollars. Our nano hairstrokes course is $2,500 for 2 days of live training on real models, with an online video library to rewatch afterward. Watch out for both extremes: very cheap courses usually have no real models, and very expensive ones are usually expensive for the name — not because you learn more.

4. Is a 2-day course really enough to start working?

Two days of live training gives you correct technique, real models under an instructor's correction, and a certificate — especially when the kit and online course arrive before class so you show up prepared. But GOOD comes from working on clients steadily after the course. That's exactly why the client-finding system matters more than any extra classroom day.

5. Do I need a license to do permanent makeup in the US?

It depends on your state — some license the individual artist, some license the shop, some run it through the county. We publish a complete guide to all 50 states: Permanent Makeup License By State. Or message the school and tell us your state — we'll point you to exactly what you need.

6. What is PhiBrows? What do the PhiBrows awards mean?

PhiBrows is the brow training system of PhiAcademy — one of the largest and most respected PMU training organizations in the world. The Best PhiBrows Master awards are judged and given by PhiAcademy each year. Jocelyn received the world title in 2018, Danny in 2021 — the Best Phi Masters 2021 announcement is on the official phi-academy.com website

7. Is online PMU training enough?

Not enough to take clients. Online is good for the knowledge side, but this is a profession of the hands — you need real models with an instructor correcting you on the spot. Online videos are best for rewatching after a live course.

8. How do I know if a school is actually legitimate?

Three things you can verify from outside sources: awards that sit on the awarding organization's website (not self-printed), real student reviews on Google, and a real salon run by the instructors — an instructor who still works on clients daily is the strongest proof of all. A school with all three earns most of your trust.

You have the 7 questions. Take them to every school you're considering — the one that answers clearly, without dodging, is showing you a good sign.
